Use it tonight

Create real magic. No expensive magic set.

An open kitchen drawer of everyday things: coins, rubber bands, string, a spoon and a deck of cards

Forget the box of plastic props. Every trick in this book starts with things you already own: a coin, a napkin, a bread roll, a rubber band. Learn one this afternoon and you can perform it at dinner tonight, with nothing to order and nothing to wait for.

Some of these tricks have been fooling clever people for 150 years. Others are James's personal favourites, the ones he still performs because of the gasps they get. Plenty need no sleight of hand at all.

And the secret is only the start. A trick on its own is just a puzzle. What turns it into a moment people talk about for weeks is how you perform it. You'll learn exactly what to say, where to look and how to turn a handful of tricks into a short show your friends and family will beg to see again.

Here's what that looks like in front of a real audience:

What readers say

From people who bought the book

  • ★★★★★
“The salt shaker trick got a proper reaction at the pub last night. That alone made the book worth buying for me.”
    Richard Evans
  • ★★★★★
“My 11 year old absolutely loves this. He's been showing us tricks all week and getting quite good at them too. Money well spent.”

“I've been performing magic for nearly 15 years and there's some really good stuff in here. A lot of classics I've used myself over the years, explained properly and with extra notes and subtleties. The advice on presentation is particularly good. Wish I'd had something like this five years ago.”

“When I was four, my teacher told me I'd never make anything of myself doing magic. Years later she bought a ticket to one of my sold-out tour shows and waited at the end to apologise, in person. Everyone starts with one small trick and at least one person who doesn't believe in it. This book is for your first trick.”

James is the BBC magician behind five international smash-hit tours: The Man Who Was Magic, The Greatest Magician™, The Secret Room and Showman among them. London Theatre called it "British magic at its finest."

His shows started tiny. Small rooms, a handful of people, a bag of props. He took them to the Edinburgh Fringe and, show by show, they grew into theatre tours. This book is where he'd tell you to start.

Not your average magic book

How to do Magic hardback on an old wooden table with a lit candle, a worn old card box, scattered old coins and a battered top hat in the spotlight

Make the everyday impossible

Coins, spoons, napkins, string, cards and a bread roll. Wherever you are, you can perform, because the props are already on the table.

Forget expensive magic kits

The thumb tip is the only thing you will ever need from a magic shop. No boxes of plastic, no expensive kit.

They will remember you, not just the trick

Part One teaches what to say, where to look and how to recover when it goes wrong. It is the bit that turns a puzzle into a moment people talk about.

Tricks that have fooled people for 150 years

Some of these classics have survived generations of clever audiences. They still work at dinner tables today.

Beginner to seasoned performer

Start with tricks that need no sleight of hand. If you already perform, the routines, scripting and stagecraft will sharpen your act.

Learn from a working touring magician

Photos and stories from James's tours show you how this magic plays in front of real audiences, night after night.

Frequently asked questions

How to do Magic hardback on a dark candlelit dinner table beside a glass of wine and a napkin
Will I really be able to do this?

Yes. Everything uses things you already own, and the book starts with tricks that need no sleight of hand. Part One shows you how to practise, what to say and what to do when something goes wrong, so you're never left on your own.

I already do magic. Is this for me?

Yes. Alongside the tricks there's a full section on performance: scripting, angles, misdirection, building a routine and a set, and handling an audience. Plenty of these classics are worth adding to any act.

Do I need any special equipment?

No. The one exception is a thumb tip, which costs about the same as a coffee. The book shows you how to use it.

Is it suitable for children?

We recommend 8+, but magic is for everyone to enjoy. It isn't a children's magic book, but James has been performing magic since he was four, and there's nothing in it that's dangerous or too hard for a child to perform. There's even a section of finger rhymes for little ones, and most tricks need no sleight of hand.

Which format should I pick?

Paperback (263 pages, 6x9in) is the one to keep open on the table while you practise. Hardback makes the best gift. Ebook if you want it on your phone, and audiobook for the stories and performance advice on the go.

Can I send it as a gift?

Yes. Choose 'Send it as a gift' at checkout. Order by 12 December for delivery before Christmas.

What if I don't like it?

You're covered by the fool someone guarantee. If your first trick doesn't fool someone at your table within 30 days, email us at supportteam@showmangroup.com for a full refund.
